Dangers of WI-FI

9th Grade Students Gain the Attention of Scientists After Their Experiment Reveals a Dark Truth About WiFi We have long encouraged students to find ways to connect with their school work, making it interesting and personal, holding their attention longer and allowing them to see more success. This was the case at a school in northern Jutland, where a group of 9th-grade students recently embarked on a biology experiment inspired by their own personal experiences with concentrating. Lea Nielsen, one of the students, explained: “We all think we have experienced difficulty concentrating in school, if we had slept with the phone next to our head, and sometimes also experienced having difficulty sleeping.” From left: Lea Nielsen, Mathilde Nielsen, Signe Nielsen, Sisse Coltau and Rikke Holm. Many readers tired of listening to climate change deniers and urge care for our planet

Thousands of scientists vs. one Re: "More ill-informed writers," by Ted Gilles, Dec. 30 Letters. Mr. Gilles took issue with three letters dated Dec. 22 concerning climate change and human contribution to such change. He stated there is "zero evidence" such changes are anything but natural. He labeled the writers as "ill informed," asserting the best evidence on climate change is to be found in the publication "An Inconvenient Deception" by Dr. Roy Spencer. Spencer is a principal research scientist for the University of Alabama in Huntsville and U.S. Science Team Leader for the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer on NASA's Aqua satellite. Spencer believes claims by other scientists regarding the severity of climate change are greatly exaggerated. However, Spencer's findings and assertions are at odds with the conclusions of the vast majority of the world's experts on the subject. Of course, it is possible that Spencer is right and the…

‘Ghost in the Shell’: Why It’s So Hard to Get the Anime Classic Right

Photofest 'Ghost in the Shell' (2017), left; 'Ghost in the Shell' (1995) Mamoru Oshii's 1995 film is a masterpiece that revels in the enigmatic and rejoices in the undefined in a way that is difficult to replicate. In 1995, the animated Ghost in the Shell was in many ways a revolution. It explored of concepts of evolution, identity, and the human soul, and in a lineup of praiseworthy films that tackle those issues, such as Metropolis, Frankenstein, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner and Ex Machina, Ghost in the Shell remains a standout. Now that Rupert Sanders' remake has hit theaters, it's worth reflecting on Mamoru Oshii's film and examining which of his anime's praiseworthy elements have made their way into the 2017 version — and which didn't. Even those who've not seen the original film will likely recognize a number of its striking visuals, many of which have been repurposed in such films as…

Partnering Opportunities with Models

I am looking for relatively fit figure art models to partner with in open drawing sessions and photography shoots. My studio is at the Rockville/Silver Spring area. The exact address will be provided to models directly. An e-mail will go out with proposed dates. Groups of artists, models and photographers will then be formed accordingly. There are opportunities for week days, weekend-ends, day-times or evenings. There is also room to discuss few special requests or preferences before committing to a session. Modeling sessions have the following format: Figure Art Drawing classes Models will take poses ranging from 5 to 30 minutes depending on the techniques I wish students to learn. I will be very involved providing instructions to students and asking models for specific classical drawing poses; and they will be comfortable. The classes will run for two-and-half hours. Open drawing sessions Duration and format of these sessions will vary.…

Nude Art Modeling Allows Me to Travel the World

This industry has its creeps and its pitfalls, but I love the freedom and the creativity it offers. I've posed among ancient Mayan ruins in the Yucatán Peninsula, reclined across white sand beaches in Queensland, and balanced on rocks in a crystal-clear Irish lake at sunrise. I've looked out from the bow of a Californian shipwreck like a figurehead and posed nude on horseback in the deserts of Utah. This is just a small sampling of the incredible places my job has taken me in the last two and a half years. At the age of 24, I've had the privilege of visiting 32 countries across five continents—something I never would have been able to accomplish without freelance art modeling. Photo by Dan Van Winkle It all started for me back in 2011, when I was 18 and living outside of Toronto. One of my friends was doing “trade for…

Tips on photographing dancers and ballerinas

Tips on photographing dancers and ballerinas Photographing a talented dancer / model, Anna L Russel (Instagram ), in the studio, I wanted to think further than just sequences. Recently I have moved more to thinking in terms of larger projects or longer-term projects, even if just over a single photo session. I liked the results from the first few jumps Anna did – explosive movements within which she’s momentally hold a pose before landing again.  I don’t know much about dance movements or what would be the perfect execution of a dance move … which would then affect my timing of the shot. During the shoot, looking at the photos on the back of my camera, she explained to me things to look out for in the dancer’s movements. She gave me tips on photographing dancers and ballerinas – what I, as the photographer, should be looking at in terms of the…

Can We Just Call This a Bus?

New “trackless trains” out of China suggest buses by any other name could smell sweeter. It’s the shape of a swoopy modern streetcar, but it’s got rubber-shod wheels of a bus. Also, there’s no driver—it’s automated like a tram. The “trackless train” is sort of a jackalope of public transportation.Or maybe it’s more like a donkey than a truly mythical creature; unlike a certain infamous straddling bus, this hybrid transportation innovation is for real.Since late October, oblong, self-driving vehicles have been using sensor technology to follow markings painted on the streets of Zhuzhou, China. Operators are behind the wheel for now, but the idea is that they won’t be needed by the time the city builds a network larger than the 3.1-kilometer test track, a dedicated lane on a heavily trafficked boulevard. Word of the apparently successful pilot reached Carlos Gimenez, the mayor of Miami-Dade County, who was so…

Why Men Keep Demanding Sex From Their Partners Over and Over

Touch isolation is creating an epidemic of sexual scarcity thinking among American men. *** In American culture, we simply don’t trust male touch. We believe that men always have a sexual agenda. We believe that, given the opportunity, men will collapse into the sexual at a moment’s notice. That men don’t know how to physically connect otherwise. That men can’t control themselves. That men are dogs. There is no corresponding narrative about the sexuality of women. This distrust of male touch applies not only in mens’ daily interactions with women, but also with other men and even with children. A stranger at the park is first and foremost a potential predator. A man who touches a woman at work, wedding ring on his finger or not, is seeking sex. A man who puts his arm around another man for longer than a few moments triggers homophobic suspicions. No matter what the…

The Ancient Egyptian city Heracleion was found in the Ocean

Off the coast of Egypt divers have discovered something that was thought to be lost a long time ago. It was said that the ancient city of Heracleion was lost under the sea for good. Well 1200 years later, off the bay of Aboukir, this ancient city has finally been discovered. The city dates back to the 6th century B.C. and holds some of the most beautiful artifacts you could imagine. Things like grand statues of gods and goddesses standing well over 15 feet tall and carved out of red granite, treasures of gold and rare stones, elaborate temples and enormous tablets. This find is enormous in the historical preservation community and has been commissioned by museums around the world. Take a look at this incredible city found underwater. Disabled chefs serve as model for change in Morocco

RABAT, Morocco (AP) — A remarkable restaurant in Morocco’s capital offers its guests the opportunity to enjoy a full, fresh meal for just $6. But what’s most remarkable are its chefs: all are developmentally disabled. Moroccan salad, grilled meat, Basque rice and lemon mousse are on the menu of the day at the restaurant, part of broader efforts by the Hadaf association that runs it to integrate disabled youth into Moroccan society and the job market, and change perspectives on disability. “At first it’s not an easy thing to teach them cooking, but day after day, thanks to their desire for learning and their passion, they are really developing capacities in the cooking field,” explains Nora Hachami, a specialist trainer at Hadaf. Since its opening in April, the restaurant has enjoyed very favorable reviews. Its customers say they appreciate the quality of the food, the low prices and the commitment…

R-Evolution on the National Mall 2017

Art can illuminate the human condition and be a catalyst to social change. R-Evolution is Deja Solis, a woman standing in her strength and power… expressing her humanity; how she feels when she is safe, when she can just be. R-Evolution is the third in a series of three monumental sculptures, The Bliss Project, by artist Marco Cochrane conceived of in collaboration with model Deja Solis, these sculptures are intended to demand a change in perspective… to be agents for social change.  They are intended to challenge the viewer to see past the sexual charge that has developed around the female body, to the person: to de-objectify women and inspire people across the world to take action to end violence against women, create space for women’s voices and demand equal rights for all, thus allowing everyone to live fully and thrive.   Standing 45 feet tall, R-Evolution was first brought…

Mathematical secrets of ancient tablet unlocked after nearly a century of study

Original Post: www.theguardian.com Dating from 1,000 years before Pythagoras’s theorem, the Babylonian clay tablet is a trigonometric table more accurate than any today, say researchers Mathematician Dr Daniel Mansfield with the Plimpton 322 tablet. Photograph: UNSW/Andrew Kelly Shares 46,456 Comments 1,329 Maev Kennedy Thursday 24 August 2017 14.00 EDT Last modified on Thursday 24 August 2017 17.00 EDT At least 1,000 years before the Greek mathematician Pythagoras looked at a right angled triangle and worked out that the square of the longest side is always equal to the sum of the squares of the other two, an unknown Babylonian genius took a clay tablet and a reed pen and marked out not just the same theorem, but a series of trigonometry tables which scientists claim are more accurate than any available today. The 3,700-year-old broken clay tablet survives in the collections of Columbia University, and scientists now believe they have cracked its…
