Coloring Book Celebrates Mathematical Beauty of Nature with Hand-Drawn Golden Ratio Illustrations

By Kristine Mitchell on April 1, 2016 Rafael Araujo’s hand-drawn Golden Ratio illustrations are a beautiful fusion of art with science. For the past 40 years, the Venezuelan architect and illustrator has been perfecting his amazing drawings that are all connected by this common theme. Armed with nothing but a pencil, compass, ruler, and protractor he creates drawings that depict the mathematical brilliance of the natural world, and has recently begun to compile renditions of his best work into an adult coloring book that seeks to reconnect humans with nature. Araujo’s illustrations revolve around intelligent patterns of growth that are ruled by the Golden Ratio. This special number, commonly annotated with the Greek letter Phi (?), is equal to 1.618 and can be seen in all sorts of natural spirals, sequences, and proportions. “Phyllotaxis” is the name given for the tendency of organic things to grow in spiral patterns and…

Artist Paints Creatures She Sees Around Her Due To Pareidolia (34 Pics)

  • Post category:ArtDrawings

By Hidreley Do you remember how you used to look at the clouds in the sky as a child and your imagination projected animals and various scenes of life? This phenomenon is called Pareidolia, which scientifically means the tendency to perceive a specific, and in a lot of cases meaningful images in completely random or ambiguous visual patterns (here you can find a list of 50 Times People Experienced Pareidolia In The Most Unexpected Places). Even though this phenomenon is more common among children, some people retain the ability to see this in their adulthood, perceiving a pattern that isn't actually there. Their brains form images from details of real objects. For example, when these people see a cloud that makes them think of a cute kitty. Or if they look at the carpet, its shape might perhaps form a battlefield for them. However, many artists who experience this phenomenon…

What’s The Difference Between Frontend And Backend?

If you’ve just started learning web development, you’ll probably have heard a lot of talk about frontend and backend programming. But what exactly do we mean by this? If you’re a beginner in the field, it can be hard to know not only which is which, but also what is covered by one or the other. While frontend and backend development are certainly distinct from one another, they’re also like two sides of the same coin. A website’s functionality relies on each side communicating and operating effectively with the other as a single unit. Is one more important than the other? Nope. They both play very important roles in web development. So where should we start? Let’s flip a coin. Struggling to become a web developer? Click here to take our free 7-Day Web Development Course Introducing Frontend Development The frontend of a website is what you see and interact…

After outcry, D.C. commission backs down on censoring art

A display of Christopher Kardambikis's "Paper Cuts/Live" exhibit at Washington Project for the Arts. WPA stands to lose $112,700 in funding from the DCCAH by not signing the memorandum. (Washington Project for the Arts) By Peggy McGlone November 8 at 5:20 PM Responding to protests from Washington artists and arts leaders, the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities has reversed a controversial new measure to censor its grant recipients. On Monday, the city’s arts agency added sweeping language to already approved grants requiring that artists and arts organizations avoid producing work that could be considered lewd, vulgar or political or be at risk of losing their funds. The arts community protested, saying the amended contract infringed on their First Amendment rights. The DCCAH capitulated. “The DC Commission on Arts and Humanities believes deeply in the right to freedom of expression and would never seek to violate that right by…

Why You Should Pose Nude

Why You Should Pose Nude Modeling Katja Gee I was warned about nude modeling on my very first shoot. The photographer I was working with told me in serious tones that she would never ask me to pose nude—and to be wary of any photographer that did. According to her, anyone who wanted me to disrobe was a predator and a pervert. The warnings didn’t stop there. As I did more research into modeling, I read countless articles that cautioned against posing nude, especially for new models. The pictures would be on the Internet forever, the authors warned, and could ruin future job opportunities. Besides, what would your mother think if she found out? Model: Katja Gee; Photographer: Art Silva To an extent, these warnings hold water. (Although for the record, none of my art nude photographers have ever been predatory, and my mother loves my work). It’s true that the images will be around forever. If you…

What separation from parents does to children: ‘The effect is catastrophic’

by William Wan June 18 Email the author This is what happens inside children when they are forcibly separated from their parents. Their heart rate goes up. Their body releases a flood of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. Those stress hormones can start killing off dendrites — the little branches in brain cells that transmit messages. In time, the stress can start killing off neurons and — especially in young children — wreaking dramatic and long-term damage, both psychologically and to the physical structure of the brain. “The effect is catastrophic,” said Charles Nelson, a pediatrics professor at Harvard Medical School. “There’s so much research on this that if people paid attention at all to the science, they would never do this.” That research on child-parent separation is driving pediatricians, psychologists and other health experts to vehemently oppose the Trump administration’s new border crossing policy, which has…

Beyond nudity. What makes a stunning work of art?

THE INSPIRED PHOTOGRAPH Thoughts and video from JOEL BELMONT on working with models to create great works of art At Model Society, we post artistic images of humanity. A lot of photographers send "sexy" photos that don't quite qualify (for us) as art. We decline as many member applications as we approve. So people ask us all the time... "What makes an image a work of art?" It's not easy to explain ... how great art reveals our collective human experience. It can portray hopes fears, beauty, sexuality and everything else that makes us human. It's not easy to explain ... that nudity as art can transcend and include sexuality. While there's no denying that many images at Model Society are "sexy", they also illuminate and respect the humanity of the models. Beyond just "sexy", Model Society celebrates the full range of humanity. We welcome a diversity of shapes, sizes and colors. We embrace the entire…

Daniel Maidman, Manou’s Pressing Hand, pencil on paper, 15”x11”, 2018 Daniel Maidman JENN SINGER GALLERY Apr 25th – May 31st Online Exclusive By JON SOARD, May 2018 Twenty-first Century Figurative drawing is quickly being recognized as a specific period in art. It is generally perceived to be a reaction to over-intellectualized visuals and a reconnection of contemporary culture to corporeal meaning. Muses: Part 1, Manou, at Jenn Singer Gallery, is an example, a solo virtual exhibition[1] of new drawings by Brooklyn-based artist and widely published author Daniel Maidman, best known for his figurative works on paper. The actual artwork is also accessible by appointment and worth the trouble. At first glance, the convenience of a virtual “gallery” format is a pristine view of immaculately rendered human forms. The drawings are graphite and white pencil rendered on fine paper such as B.F.K. Reeves, tan, or dark, gunmetal gray. Unfortunately, they are…

Polish Painter Who Learned To “Photograph Dreams” – His Works Will Give You Nightmares

Polish Painter Who Learned To “Photograph Dreams” – His Works Will Give You Nightmares By Andrius Let us take you on a journey through the curious mind of a Polish artist, Zdzisław Beksiński, who made a name for himself with his dystopian surrealism paintings, filled with post-apocalyptic imagery and nightmarish creatures. The artist is no longer with us to better explain the vast roster of over 300 of his works, but he used to say: "I wish to paint in such a manner as if I were photographing dreams.” And that is exactly what popped into my head when I first saw his paintings. Even, though, they utilize recognizable everyday objects, those are paired and arranged in ways only the dream world could sustain in a single picture. These unseen combinations gave birth to mind-bending scenarios, which do build an anxious feeling while looking at them. The artwork is beautifully…

How to Print on Wood (Sort of)

  • Post category:Art

You might not know this, but the inkjet printer sitting around your house still has a few tricks up its paper tray. It can print on wood – well, sort of. In planning for my daughter’s first birthday party, I attempted to track down a vintage sign related doughnuts (it was a doughnut-themed party). Rather than spend a bunch of money on Etsy, I thought, “Why not just make this sign myself?” The only problem was that trying to paint anything by hand would look not so great, so I took to Google to find a way to transfer a digital design from my computer to a piece of wood. It turns out that trusty wax paper sitting in your kitchen drawer makes this all possible. Let’s get to it. What You’ll Need For this project you’ll need the following: unfinished, untreated, sanded wood. I recommend a lighter wood…

New 3D-printed algae could revolutionize the way we make things

  • Post category:ArtArticles

Plastic waste is clogging landfills and strangling the earth’s waterways – but thankfully, green design is here to save the world. Dutch designers Eric Klarenbeek and Maartje Dros have created a bioplastic made from algae that can be 3D printed into virtually any shape – and could finally provide the world with a viable green alternative to plastic.   Klarenbeek and Dros begin by cultivating algae, which is then dried and processed into a liquid bioplastic that can be used to 3D print objects. This algae polymer can be used to manufacture any number of products from shampoo bottles and tableware to trash cans. The innovative process could completely replace products made from fossil fuels. Related:3D-Printed Mycelium Chair Sprouts Living Mushrooms! The designers believe that products made from algae (which absorbs carbon dioxide during photosynthesis) could revolutionize the manufacturing world. “Algae is equally interesting for making biomass because it can…
